What 24 Public Hook Examples Reveal About Hook Patterns

We classified a small, reproducible sample of public hook examples using HookFix's six-pattern rubric. The result is a structural snapshot of four resources—not a performance study or a claim about what goes viral.

Executive summary

All six HookFix patterns appeared at least twice. Contrarian framing was the most frequent primary code at 8 of 24 examples, while Story was least frequent at 2 of 24. Mistake framing appeared across the widest range of sources—three of four.

The defensible conclusion is narrow: this six-pattern taxonomy covered the structural range in this pilot sample. It does not show that the taxonomy is exhaustive, that one pattern performs better, or that HookFix scores predict platform outcomes.

Methodology

We selected the first six qualifying examples from each of four public resources, using a recorded section and ordinal so every row can be checked again. The research artifact stores short structural paraphrases rather than copied scripts.

The ordered coding rule was: List, Mistake, Contrarian, Story, Authority, then Curiosity gap. The first matching rule became the primary pattern; a secondary pattern was recorded only when another structure was materially present.

A non-blinded adjudication pass kept 22 of 24 original primary labels and corrected two rows where Contrarian should have taken precedence. This is a stability check, not independent inter-rater validation.

Limitations

  • The purposive sample is small and cannot represent TikTok as a whole.
  • Examples were coded by one reviewer; no independent inter-rater study was run.
  • The forced primary code simplifies hooks that combine multiple structures.

  • This study does not measure views, retention, or virality.
